Setting up Redirection

This step is one of the most important steps to migrate from blogger to WordPress. If you want to know how to migrate from blogger to WordPress, you need to know setting up redirection process.

You need to set up redirection on two levels.1st, redirect blogger visitors to your new WordPress blog and 2nd, once users reach your WordPress site, you will redirect them to the exact post they are trying to read.

Go to blogger blog account and click on Template. Scroll down the Template page, when you find Revert to Classic Template just click on it. Finally, click on Revert to Classic Template link.

Then you will see Edit Template HTML text area. You need to replace the entire code with the following code.

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "">
<html xmlns="" xml:lang="en" lang="en" dir="<$BlogLanguageDirection$>">
<script type="text/javascript">
<MainPage><link rel="canonical" href="" /></MainPage>
<link rel="canonical" href="<$BlogItemPermalinkURL$>" />
<div style="border:#ccc 1px solid; background:#eee; padding:20px; margin:80px;">
<p>This page has moved to a new address.</p>
<MainOrArchivePage><a href=""><$BlogTitle$></a></MainOrArchivePage>
<a href="<$BlogItemPermalinkURL$>"><$BlogItemTitle$></a>
</div> </body></html>

You need to replace with your domain name. Save your template. You have successfully completed redirection on your blogger blog.

Now you need to set your redirection on your WordPress that users will be redirected to the proper posts. Using Notepad or other text editors you need to create a news file. Give a name of this file such as redirected.php then copy and paste the below code in this file.

<?php require_once('wp-load.php');
$res = $wpdb->get_results("SELECT post_id, meta_value FROM $wpdb->postmeta WHERE meta_key = 'blogger_permalink'");
foreach ($res as $row)
{ $slug = explode("/",$row->meta_value);
$slug = explode(".",$slug[3]);
$wpdb->query("UPDATE $wpdb->posts SET post_name ='" . $slug[0] . "' WHERE ID = $row->post_id");
echo "Permalinks are Fixed! Welcome to WordPress, Happy Blogging";

Now upload redirected.php file to public_html of your WordPress installation.

Then run this php code on your site from the following link that you can fix the permalinks issues. You get a message as done.

Redirect Feeds

To redirect RSS feeds, you need to go blogger Dashboard. Then Click on Settings >> Other. You will see Site Feed section. Now click on Add link just next to Post Feed Redirect URL. Here you can enter the web address of your new WordPress RSS feed and the existing RSS subscriber will automatically move to your new feed.

Importing Images from Blogger to WordPress

You must want to import all the images to your WordPress which you have uploaded in blogger. There are different ways to do that but I think using importer plugin, you can easily do it. You can use Cache Image Plugin.

Install and activate this plugin to WordPress. Then go to Tools >> Cache Remote Images. Then click on Scan Or Scan(including linked) that you will get a list of domains from which images can be cached. Now click on Cache from this domain button then the images will import directly to your folders. All the previous images URLs are replaced with the new ones.
